Aligning your McLeod 8-bolt Flywheel: A Quick Guide

Aligning your McLeod 8-bolt Flywheel: A quick guide

McLeod offers a variety of flywheels for your modular 4.6L or 5.0L Coyote platform. The most popular options are their Aluminum Flywheel, Steel Flywheel and Lightened Steel Flywheels in an 8-bolt configuration to match your modular crankshaft.

The aluminum flywheel is most ideal for higher horsepower builds (think supercharged or turbocharged setups) that achieve high RPMs rapidly.  The McLeod aluminum flywheel is CNC machined from 6061 T6 aluminum and comes equipped with a replaceable steel friction plate and a steel hardened ring gear.

The McLeod Racing steel flywheels are ideal for street and light race applications where stop lights are a factor and drivability is a concern.  Their steel flywheels are also offered in different weights for different uses. For most street/strip builds, a lightened steel flywheel offers the ultimate middleground between the too-light aluminum flywheel and too-heavy steel flywheel. For more race-geared applications, where you are launching a heavy car with less torque/horsepower than a full race setup, you can use their standard steel flywheel. The weight difference is about 8lbs between them.

Once you've chosen and received your flywheel, it's time to install it on the vehicle. While McLeod provides full installation instructions, we often receive calls that the customer's flywheel is not lining up with the crankshaft. 99.9% of the time it's just a matter of turning the flywheel.

The McLeod 8-bolt flywheels are indexed to the crankshaft, meaning the holes are specifically placed in the same pattern as the rear of the modular crankshaft. These holes are not evenly placed all the way around, so it's not just a simple bolt up and go.

Once you have the flywheel in place, you will want to rotate it in a circle until the flywheel and the crankshaft are perfectly aligned. This way the flywheel bolts will install with no issues.
