The N2MB WOT Box has been a hot seller for years, and the reason is simple: it adds two features to just about any car, and both of them make you faster in ways you can feel from the driver's seat.
Those features are 2-step launch control and no-lift shifting. It is universal, so it does not care much what you drive. Below is what each feature actually does, how to use it correctly, and the complete wiring install for a 2015-up S550 Mustang.
No-lift shifting
Universal fitment
Adjustable 25 to 700 milliseconds
What the WOT Box Does
Mechanically, both features work the same way: the box sends a signal to the PCM to cut power to individual coils. What changes is when it does it and why.
On the launch, cutting spark is what lets you hold a set RPM against a wide-open throttle. On the shift, cutting spark for a fraction of a second is what lets you keep your foot buried while the gears change.
2-Step Launch Control
The box holds the RPM you want to launch at, which gives you a consistent, repeatable launch instead of one that depends on how good your right foot is that day. On a boosted car it does something more valuable: it lets you build boost before you leave, so you launch with power already there rather than waiting for it.
How to Use It
- Line up at the starting line.
- Push the clutch pedal all the way in.
- Go to full throttle. All the way. This matters, see the warning below.
- The engine revs to your programmed RPM and holds there.
- Release the clutch and go.
No-Lift Shifting
Here is the problem no-lift shifting solves. Power shift without a WOT Box and, when you push the clutch in, engine RPM flares. The transmission input shaft then needs a moment to slow down before the gear will go in cleanly. That moment is lost time, and repeating it is wear on the transmission.
The WOT Box cuts ignition for a very short window while you shift. The synchros mesh easily, wear drops, and your odds of missing a gear go down. On a boosted car it also means you hold boost through the shift instead of rebuilding it on the other side.
How to Use It
- At full throttle, put your foot on the clutch pedal. That sends the shift signal.
- The box cuts ignition for the duration you programmed, adjustable from 25 to 700 milliseconds.
- Shift, and keep your foot down through it.
S550 Install: 2015-up Mustang
This is the wiring install for a 2015-up S550. It involves soldering into three ECU pins and cutting one coil control wire, so read the whole thing before you start.
Mounting and Routing
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Pick your mounting spot for the N2MB unit. The glove box area is the usual recommendation.
- Raise the vehicle, remove the passenger front wheel and the inner fender liner.
- Find the harness grommet at the rear of the fender well. Locate the small accessory nipple on it and cut off just the tip.
- Pull the wiring through the grommet and follow the factory harness to route into the engine bay. Secure the wires away from anything sharp or hot.
- Unlatch the fuse box so you can route the wires up and around to the ECU.
ECU Connections
Disconnect both ECU connectors before you start. Then work the bottom connector first.
| Connector | Pin | Factory wire | N2MB wire |
|---|---|---|---|
| C175B (bottom) | 8 | Green with violet stripe | Green |
| C175B (bottom) | 60 | Blue with white stripe | Blue |
| C175E (top) | 70 | Yellow with violet stripe | Yellow |
Coil Control
The coil control plug sits above the ECU next to the fuse box. This is the one place you do cut.
- Pull back some factory loom on the engine side of the plug to reach the wires.
- Find the solid violet wire and cut it roughly two inches from the plug.
- Solder the plug-side violet wire to the N2MB red wire. Heat shrink recommended.
- Solder the other half of the violet wire, the one heading to the coils, to the N2MB orange wire. Heat shrink recommended.
- Reinstall all plugs, looms, and harness protection. Confirm every connection is secure.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Software Setup
Download the WOTBOX software from N2MB, connect your laptop to the box with the supplied cable, and follow the installer's instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the N2MB WOT Box do?
Two things: 2-step launch control, which holds a set RPM for a consistent launch, and no-lift shifting, which lets you shift at full throttle without lifting.
Does the WOT Box fit my car?
It is universal and works on just about any car. Wiring specifics differ by platform, and this guide covers the 2015-up S550 Mustang.
How much time does no-lift shifting save?
In testing, some cars have dropped as much as seven tenths off their ET from the no-lift shift feature alone.
Why isn't my 2-step engaging?
Almost always because the throttle is not fully open. Easing into the pedal means the box never gets the signal. It has to be full throttle.
How long should I set the ignition cut?
It is adjustable from 25 to 700 milliseconds. Start at the short end and work up until shifts feel clean. Too long and you lose time you were trying to save.
Is the WOT Box install plug and play?
No. It requires soldering into three ECU pins and cutting the coil control wire. Doable at home if you can solder properly, otherwise have a shop do it.
Do I need a tune to run the WOT Box?
No. It works independently of your calibration, though it pairs naturally with a tuned car since most people adding launch control are chasing consistency at the strip.
Does no-lift shifting hurt the transmission?
The opposite. By cutting ignition during the shift it lets the synchros mesh easily, which reduces wear compared to power shifting without it.
