You've done the hard part. The McLeod kit is bought, the transmission is back in, and the pedal feels like something new. Now do not ruin it in the first hundred miles.
Break-in on a performance clutch is not a manufacturer covering itself. It is a physical process, and skipping it is the most common reason a perfectly good twin disc ends up chattering, slipping, or coming back apart early.
Why Break-In Matters
Breaking in a clutch is about seating the discs against the pressure plate and the flywheel. Those surfaces leave the factory flat but not mated. They have to wear into each other under controlled heat before they will grip consistently across their whole face.
Get that right and the clutch holds what it is rated to hold and engages smoothly. Get it wrong and you have locked in an uneven friction surface that will never fully come good.
The Break-In Procedure
Short version: drive roughly 500 miles in normal stop-and-go city traffic. Not 500 miles of highway. That works out to about 900 to 1,000 clutch cycles, which is the number that actually matters.

- City driving, not cruising. Every engagement is a heat cycle. Highway miles give you one engagement and then nothing for an hour.
- Expect some chatter and some smell. Both are normal during break-in on a performance clutch. Neither means something is wrong.
- No racing, no hard launches until the miles are in.
- No dyno pulls. More on that below, because this is the one people ignore.

Three Things to Get Right at Install
Break-in cannot fix an install problem. If you are reading this before the transmission goes back in, these three are worth more than the 500 miles.
- Flywheel surface. Reusing your existing flywheel? It has to be properly resurfaced. McLeod recommends an 80 to 120 grit finish with a visible cross hatch. The real test: run a fingernail across it and it should catch. Then spray it with brake cleaner to remove any oil, film, or machining residue. This one step does more to prevent clutch chatter than anything else on the list.
- Balance. Have the clutch and flywheel assembly balanced together. Same logic as balancing a wheel and tire, and it is what keeps you from chasing a vibration that only shows up at one specific RPM.
- Break-in. The 500 miles. Which is why you're here.
Do Not Dyno It Yet
