S650 Comparison

Mustang GT vs Dark Horse: Specs, Differences & Which to Buy

Both cars run a 5.0L Coyote V8. That shared starting point is why this comparison confuses people, and it is also why the answer is clearer than it looks: these are the same engine built for two different jobs.

The GT is the best all-around choice for street driving, value, and easy upgrades. The Dark Horse adds track-focused hardware and sharper performance. This guide covers power, acceleration, transmissions, suspension, brakes, interior, and the use case each one is actually built for.

Spec Comparison

Mustang GT Dark Horse
Engine Gen-4 5.0L Coyote V8 5.0L Coyote V8, GT500-derived internals
Horsepower 486 hp with Active Valve Dual Exhaust, 480 without 500 hp
Torque 418 lb-ft with active exhaust, 415 without 418 lb-ft
0-60 4.3 sec, manual with active exhaust and performance package 3.7 sec automatic / 4.1 sec manual
Redline Around 7,500 rpm Around 7,500 rpm
Manual 6-speed with rev matching 6-speed, titanium shift knob
Automatic 10-speed SelectShift, paddle shifters 10-speed SelectShift, silver paddles
Suspension Independent rear, selectable drive modes Optional magnetic damping
Brakes Standard, packages available Larger Brembos
Built for Street, daily, occasional track Track days and twisty roads
14 horsepower is the headline and the least interesting number here. Nobody feels 14 hp. What you feel is the magnetic damping, the bigger brakes, and half a second to 60 on the automatic. Buy the Dark Horse for the chassis, not the engine.

Engine & Power

Mustang GT

The 2025 GT runs the Gen-4 5.0L Coyote, making up to 486 horsepower and 418 lb-ft with the Active Valve Dual Exhaust system. Without it you still get 480 hp and 415 lb-ft. It is built for high-rpm performance, optimized for air and fuel efficiency, and peaks near a 7,500 rpm redline.

With the six-speed manual, active exhaust, and the performance package, the GT runs 0-60 in 4.3 seconds.

Where this platform gets genuinely interesting is under boost. A Gen-4 Coyote responds very well to a supercharger with the right supporting mods and calibration, and that is the argument for buying the GT and spending the price difference on power instead.

Dark Horse

The Dark Horse makes 500 horsepower from the same 5.0L, which crosses 100 hp per liter naturally aspirated. It is the strongest naturally aspirated Mustang 5.0 to date, and it gets there with GT500-derived internals and more aggressive tuning.

Those internals are the part worth paying attention to. A stronger bottom end is a better starting point if you ever go forced induction, even though the Dark Horse costs more to start with.

0-60 in 3.7 seconds with the automatic, 4.1 seconds with the six-speed manual.

Exterior Design

Mustang GT

The GT keeps the model's design language and modernizes it. Aggressive stance, prominent hood vents that tell you what is underneath, and a raised wedge decklid spoiler painted to match the body on every GT. Optional extras include the Performance Raised Rear Wing and the dual 3.5" exhaust with quad tips that comes with the Active Valve system.

Dark Horse

The Dark Horse goes further toward track aesthetics: a front splitter, rear spoiler, and additional aero designed to cut drag and improve high-speed stability. It is a real aero package rather than a trim treatment, and the visual difference is the byproduct.

Our own 2024 Dark Horse wears DX Carbon upgrades, which is our carbon fiber line and covers hood vents, splitters, spoilers, mirror covers and grille bezels for both the Dark Horse and the S650 GT.

Interior

Mustang GT

Modern tech with muscle car traditions intact. A 12.4" LCD instrument cluster covers performance data and infotainment, and the rest is built for comfort and convenience: auto lights with wiper activation, black foot pedals, auto-dimming frameless rearview mirror, and a center console with a full armrest.

Dark Horse

A flat-bottomed steering wheel wrapped in performance suede with Bright Indigo Blue stitching, and that stitching carries across the instrument panel, door panels, seats, shift boot, and console trim. It reads as a deliberate theme rather than an options-list checkbox.

Transmissions

Both cars offer a manual and an automatic, and the hardware is largely shared.

  • GT manual: 6-speed with rev matching, which blips the throttle on downshifts to keep the engine in its power band.
  • GT automatic: 10-speed SelectShift with paddle shifters behind the wheel.
  • Dark Horse manual: the same 6-speed, with an anodized blue lightweight titanium shift knob.
  • Dark Horse automatic: the same 10-speed SelectShift, with anodized silver paddles.
The automatic is the quicker car. 3.7 seconds versus 4.1 in the Dark Horse. If your priority is trap times rather than involvement, the paddles win, and that is true on both cars.

Handling & Suspension

Mustang GT

Tuned for balance: exhilarating enough to be worth driving, comfortable enough to daily. Independent rear suspension and selectable drive modes cover most of what a street car needs.

Dark Horse

This is where the money actually goes. Optional magnetic damping paired with larger Brembo brakes gives you a car that holds up to repeat hard laps rather than one that is quick until the brakes get hot. If you are buying for track days, this is the reason, not the 500 hp figure.

Which One to Buy

  • Buy the GT if the car is a daily driver, a weekend cruiser, and an occasional track toy. It is the better value, has the wider range of packages, and it is the smarter platform if your plan is to add a supercharger and spend the price difference on power.
  • Buy the Dark Horse if track days and hard driving on twisty roads are the point. The magnetic damping, the Brembos, and the GT500-derived internals are what you are paying for, and they are worth it for that use case.
The honest version. If your plan is boost, buy the GT and put the difference into the supercharger and supporting mods. If your plan is lap times on stock power, buy the Dark Horse. Buying a Dark Horse and immediately supercharging it is not wrong, it is just the most expensive route to the same place.

Either way, both cars come alive with the right parts. Airflow, exhaust, suspension, brakes, and power adders all move the needle on the S650, and our S650 mod guide covers the order to do them in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both the Mustang GT and Dark Horse use the same engine?

Yes, both use a 5.0L Coyote V8. The Dark Horse has more aggressive tuning and GT500-derived internals.

How much horsepower does a 2025 Mustang GT make?

Up to 486 horsepower with the Active Valve Dual Exhaust, or 480 horsepower without it.

How much horsepower does a Mustang Dark Horse make?

500 horsepower from the 5.0L Coyote, which is 100 hp per liter naturally aspirated.

What are the 0-60 times for GT vs Dark Horse?

A properly equipped GT runs about 4.3 seconds. The Dark Horse is around 3.7 seconds with the automatic and about 4.1 seconds with the manual.

Which is better for daily driving, GT or Dark Horse?

The GT, for comfort, value, and the range of available packages.

Which is better for track days, GT or Dark Horse?

The Dark Horse. The magnetic damping and larger Brembos are built for handling, braking, and high speed durability, which is what track use punishes.

What transmission options are available on the Mustang GT?

A 6-speed manual with rev matching, or a 10-speed automatic with SelectShift and paddle control.

Does the Mustang GT have rev matching?

Yes, the GT's manual transmission includes rev matching for smoother downshifts.

Can you supercharge a 2024 to 2026 Mustang GT?

Yes. The Gen-4 Coyote responds very well to boost when paired with the right supporting upgrades and a proper tune.

Is the Dark Horse worth the extra money over a GT?

For track use, yes, because you are buying magnetic damping, bigger brakes, and stronger internals. For street driving or a boost build, the GT is the better value and the difference is better spent on parts.
