In the late 1980s, Ford set out to make line-wide changes, and replacing its aging V8s was high on the list. The Ford Modular V8 was the result. It reached the public in 1991 in the only car worthy of such a debut: the Lincoln Town Car. We can almost hear the Mustang GT crowd groaning in unison, and that reaction sums up how the 4.6 Modular V8 was first received in the GT. Enthusiasts could not understand why Ford would put an "old-fogey" engine in their pony, and some still turn their noses up at the whole era. But the beloved 5.0 Coyote is part of the same Modular family, and we never get there without the 4.6. So haters and enthusiasts alike, strap in.

What Is the Ford Modular V8?

You cannot discredit how vital the Modular V8 is to Ford history. This family of engines appeared in a ton of models, including Lincolns, Mercurys, and plenty of ponies. It was developed and primarily built at the Ford Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Michigan (which is why you will hear them called "Romeo engines"), with production later expanded to Windsor, Ontario. That is a little ironic, since it replaced the old "Windsor V8" in the Mustang GT.

Ford invested heavily in the engine and it paid off, replacing the older V8s across the lineup after about 1992, the Mustang GT included. Specifically, it was the 4.6 Modular V8 that powered everyone's favorite pony. We are focusing on the 4.6 here because there were many Modular engines, some built for big trucks. Why Is It Called a "Modular" Engine?

Common misconception: the name is not about swappable parts. While people love modding 4.6 engines (more on that below), "Modular" is about production. Ford wanted to build different engines on the same manufacturing line, and the term described that flexibility. It is a big reason so many variations of this engine exist.

From 1964 through 1996, every V8 Mustang used a pushrod engine. The 1996 Mustang GT was the first 4.6 Modular model. How did it compare?

  • The pushrod motor had great low-end torque, but the Modular V8 revved higher and made power further up the band.
  • The Modular V8's overhead camshaft design was unique for a Mustang V8 at the time.

Versions of the 4.6 Modular V8

There are three key versions of the 4.6 Modular V8:

  • 2-Valve SOHC (single overhead camshaft)
  • 3-Valve SOHC
  • 4-Valve DOHC (dual overhead camshaft)

The 4-valve DOHC actually predates the 3-valve version, and both are considered high-performance classics, the point where a lot of early doubters came around on the Modular platform.

  • Valve guide seals deteriorate, especially on early models, and the overhead cam design makes it a tricky repair.
  • Awkward spark plug placement, easy to break off during removal, especially on 3-valve engines.
  • The factory intake manifolds, rods, and pistons are on the weak side.
