Calimer Built MT-82 Transmissions: Stages, Specs & FAQ

Ahhh, the MT-82. There is a lot to be said about it, some good and some bad, but if you are reading this it is probably bad.

Everyone knows MT-82 life can be difficult. Sometimes it is luck of the draw, sometimes it is the street and the strip doing what they do. Either way there is a fix: a Calimer Transmissions built MT-82.

Ben Calimer has built a serious reputation supplying some of the fastest 6-speed cars in the country. Whether your MT-82 has already let go or you are getting out in front of it, there are four stages to choose from. This page covers what each one gets you and the practical details people call us about.

The MT-82 Problem

Two things fail on these boxes: the shift mechanism and, at higher power, the gears themselves. Ford used plastic pieces in the shift rail assembly and the factory shift pads wear. That is where the vague, sloppy, missed-gear feeling comes from long before anything actually breaks.

Every Calimer stage addresses the shift mechanism first, with bronze shift pads and a billet shift rail stop replacing the factory plastic. That is the baseline. What separates the stages above that is how much strength gets added, and whether the gearset itself gets replaced.

Core required No No No No
No core required on any stage. You are not sending a broken transmission in first and waiting. That matters when the car is already down.
The big dividing line is between Stage 2 and Stage 3. Stages 1 and 2 rebuild and strengthen your factory gearset. Stage 3 and 4 replace it with a billet G-Force gearset and move to a 26-spline input shaft, which means a different clutch. Budget for that before you decide.

What Each Stage Adds

Stage 1

The shift mechanism fix plus a fresh rebuild. Bronze shift pads, billet shift rail stop replacing the factory plastic pieces, and new synchros and seals. If your box shifts badly but has not failed, this is the honest starting point.

Stage 2

Everything in Stage 1, plus REM polishing and cryo treatment. Both are surface and material treatments: polishing reduces friction between the gear faces, cryo improves the metal's durability. You are not adding parts, you are making the existing ones last longer under load.

Stage 3

This is where it stops being a rebuild. Stage 3 adds a billet gearset produced by G-Force specifically for Calimer Transmissions, on top of everything in Stage 2.

Rated to 1000 hp and 900 tq. Calimer's position is that no other Stage 3 MT-82 has this power handling capability, and given who runs these boxes, that is a claim with cars behind it.

Stage 4

Calimer's most comprehensive package. Billet gearset and 26-spline input shaft as in Stage 3, plus an HD billet main shaft, new carbon fiber synchronizers, and micro-polishing of internal parts to reduce friction, increase longevity and improve gear engagement. New seals and bearings throughout, professional reassembly, a painted case, and the recommended oil included.

This is the serious high-horsepower and competition answer. If you are building a car that will see repeated hard launches at real power, this is the one.

2018 and newer? Calimer also builds the MT-82D4 for 2018+ S550 and 2024+ S650 Mustang GT. Different box, different product. Stage 2 MT-82D4 is here.

Before You Order

Three things catch people out. None of them are difficult, all of them are annoying to discover after the transmission arrives.

1. Tailshaft. These transmissions come with a 2011-2014 tailshaft. If your car is 2015 or newer, you need to use your 2015+ tailshaft. Plan for that swap as part of the install.
2. Clutch spline count on Stage 3 and 4. Both use a 26-spline input shaft, so a 26-spline clutch is required. Use the same clutch you would for a 2007-2009 Shelby GT500. Your existing 23-spline clutch will not work.
3. It ships dry. You must add fluid. Calimer prefers 2 quarts of Amsoil Synchromesh plus 0.75 quart of Amsoil 75-90 Transaxle Fluid. Ford's factory recommended fluids also work. Do not start the car without filling it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do MT-82 transmissions fail?

Two separate issues. The shift mechanism uses factory plastic pieces and shift pads that wear, which causes vague shifts and missed gears. Then at higher power the gearset itself becomes the limit. Every Calimer stage fixes the first problem; Stage 3 and 4 replace the gearset to fix the second.

Do I need to send in my old transmission as a core?

No. There is no core required on any stage, so you are not waiting on a core exchange with the car down.

Which Calimer stage do I need?

Stage 1 if it shifts poorly but has not failed. Stage 2 if you want the same rebuild with REM polishing and cryo treatment for durability. Stage 3 if you are at real power and need the billet gearset. Stage 4 for high-horsepower and competition use.

How much power will a Stage 3 MT-82 handle?

It is rated to 1000 hp and 900 tq. Calimer's position is that no other Stage 3 MT-82 matches that capability.

What clutch do I need for a Stage 3 or Stage 4?

A 26-spline clutch, because both use a 26-spline input shaft. Use the same clutch as a 2007-2009 Shelby GT500. A 23-spline clutch will not fit.

Will a Calimer MT-82 fit my 2015 or newer Mustang?

Yes, but the transmission ships with a 2011-2014 tailshaft. On a 2015+ car you use your own 2015+ tailshaft.

Does the transmission come filled with fluid?

No, it ships dry. Calimer prefers 2 quarts of Amsoil Synchromesh plus 0.75 quart of Amsoil 75-90 Transaxle Fluid. Ford's factory recommended fluids are also acceptable.

What is REM polishing and cryo treatment?

REM polishing smooths the gear surfaces to reduce friction between them. Cryo treatment is a cold process that improves the metal's durability. Neither adds parts; both make the existing components survive more load.

Is there a Calimer option for a 2018 or newer Mustang?

Yes. Those cars use the MT-82D4, and Calimer builds that separately, covering 2018+ S550 and 2024+ S650 Mustang GT.

Can I use a Calimer MT-82 in a swap or non-Mustang project?

People do. The source of these boxes is the Mustang, but we do not discriminate about where it ends up. Call us and describe the project.
