Maximum Motorsports solid steering shaft assemblies replace the rubber rag joint with welded needle-bearing U-joints for sharper steering response and no setscrews to loosen. Choose the shaft that matches your year and steering rack. Don't forget rack bushings.
Power steering rack, 1979-1993 (MMST-11)
Solid steering shaft assembly for 1979-1993 Mustangs with the stock Ford power steering rack. Does NOT fit Flaming River power steering racks. If you are installing an SN95 power steering rack in a Fox Mustang, you need MM's hybrid steering shaft (MMST-13); for a manual rack, you need MMST-12.1.
Manual steering rack, 1979-1993 (MMST-12.1)
Solid steering shaft assembly for manual steering rack equipped 1979-1993 Mustangs. Required when converting to a manual steering rack. The MMST-12.1 fits the just-redesigned Flaming River manual steering racks, the previous generation of Flaming River manual racks, OEM Ford manual racks and other aftermarket manual rack brands. (The first generation MMST-12 does not fit the newest Flaming River manual racks because Flaming River changed the retention feature on the input shaft.) For manual racks only; it does not fit a power rack.
SN95 power steering rack swap, 1979-1993 (MMST-13)
Hybrid steering shaft assembly for an SN95 (1994-2004) power steering rack swapped into a 1979-1993 Mustang. Fits the stock Ford power steering rack; does NOT fit Flaming River power steering racks. A unique upper shaft allows proper clocking of the Fox Mustang steering wheel to match the SN95 steering rack.
Manual steering rack, 1994-2004 (MMST-15.2)
Solid steering shaft assembly for 1994-2004 Mustangs equipped with a Flaming River manual steering rack. Required when installing a manual rack because the steering shafts for power racks (stock or aftermarket) do not fit the input shaft of a manual rack. The MMST-15.2 supersedes MMST-15.1 and MMST-15, fits the 2017-redesigned Flaming River manual racks as well as the previous two generations and other aftermarket manual rack brands, and allows clocking the steering wheel so it is centered. For manual racks only.
Benefits
- Improves steering response by eliminating deflection allowed by the stock rubber rag joint.
- Reduces annoying play at the steering wheel.
- Stays secure because there are no setscrews to loosen.
- Precise fitment because its telescoping length accommodates different steering rack positions.
- Easier installation because it can be collapsed to a shorter length, then extended to fit.
- 1979-1993 shafts add a collapsible section between the rack and the firewall for improved safety, and improve header clearance at the lower U-joint.
Product Features
- U-joints are welded to the shaft, so there are no setscrews to loosen.
- Attaches to the steering rack with a pinch-bolt clamp (just like OEM) instead of a setscrew.
- Two race-quality needle-bearing U-joints replace the rubber rag joint and the upper pin-and-block U-joint.
- Telescoping design allows lengthening (up to 1.1" longer than the stock shaft on 1979-1993 shafts) to allow repositioning of the steering rack.
- Unique design of the collapsible center section prevents the two halves from pulling apart.
