Suncoast Performance 10R80 Rebuild Kits Explained

In racing, things break, especially when you keep adding horsepower and torque. The 10R80 is a strong transmission, but push it hard enough and it will let go. That is where the Suncoast Performance 10R80 rebuild kits come in. They come in five levels, Category 0 through Category 4, each a complete clutch and steel module with new Raybestos GPZ clutches and steels that fits the Ford 10R80 found in the F-150, Bronco, and Mustang.

What comes in each Category 0-4 kit.

What's in the Kits

Every kit contains the clutches and steels needed to rebuild the 10R80. As you move up the categories you add expanded-capacity clutches, upgraded valve body, and flexplate for higher power. Here is what each component does and why you want it.

Replacement Clutches (Raybestos GPZ)

Raybestos Powertrain GPZ friction plates greatly increase transmission performance and durability. The friction material far exceeds OE, withstanding high stress, high temperatures, and repeated cycling, and testing shows it outperforms OE material by as much as 20%, with performance that improves as power increases.

  • Withstands high horsepower and greater torque capacity
  • Maintains piston travel and higher heat resistance
  • Smooth engagements and enhanced shift feel

New Filter

The 10R80 uses a redesigned filter with two media types, fine and coarse, separated by a thermal plate. When the fluid is cold and thicker at startup, it flows through both. As it heats up and thins, the thermal plate bends to restrict the coarse section and direct most flow through the fine media, catching more fine debris once warm for far better filtration. Category 1 through 4 kits include a complete gasket overhaul kit plus a brand-new factory filter to ensure zero flow issues.

Extra Capacity D, E & F Clutches

Every kit has the frictions and steels for a full clutch and steel replacement, but Category 2 and up add expanded-capacity "D", "E", and "F" clutch modules. These are complete drop-in replacements, no machining required.

The "D" Clutch

It is not uncommon to see rapid degradation and premature failure of this clutch pack even in stock form. The "D" clutch is engaged in most gears, and its role as the oncoming clutch in 6th gear is where higher horsepower and demanding driving take their toll. Suncoast adds an expanded-capacity module here, increasing clutch count 17% (from the factory 6-clutch count to 7) for a big jump in durability.

Pro-Loc Valve Body

The Suncoast 10R80 Pro-Loc valve body addresses several known issues. Chief among them: in higher-horsepower applications the TCC (torque converter clutch) can slip, in some cases for as long as a full second. The Pro-Loc valve body tightens that engagement up for consistent, positive lockup under power, while a stock setup keeps that refined feel for normal driving.

Billet Flexplate

Suncoast's billet 10R80 one-piece flexplate is machined from 4140 forged billet steel with an integrated, heat-treated, oil-quenched ring gear. It is nearly twice the thickness of the factory unit, which renders deflection virtually non-existent, and it uses a relief ring to prevent deflection of the crankshaft trigger wheel pulse ring, a known issue at high RPM. It is SFI-certified to 29.2, good for over 11,000 RPM and 1,700-plus horsepower. In short, the toughest flexplate on the market, and Suncoast guarantees it.

Features & Benefits

  • SFI-certified 29.2
  • 4140 forged billet steel, one-piece construction
  • Clamping doubled when paired with a Suncoast ProLoc converter
  • Integrated heat-treated, oil-quenched ring gear
  • Thicker construction that reduces deflection
  • Redesigned relief ring that eliminates pulse-ring deflection at high RPM

Suncoast 10R80 FAQ

Which vehicles use the 10R80 transmission?

The Ford 10R80 10-speed automatic comes in the F-150, Bronco, and Mustang. These Suncoast kits are built to rebuild that transmission.

What is the difference between the kit categories?

Category 0 is a complete clutch and steel rebuild. Moving up (Cat 1-4) adds the gasket/filter overhaul, then expanded-capacity D/E/F clutches, and up to the Pro-Loc valve body and billet flexplate for higher-power builds.

Do the expanded clutches require machining?

No. The expanded-capacity D, E, and F clutch modules are complete drop-in replacements, no machining required.

How much power can a built 10R80 handle?

It depends on the category and supporting parts, but the top-tier components (billet flexplate SFI-rated to 1,700-plus hp, Pro-Loc valve body, expanded clutches) are built for serious blower and high-torque builds. Call us to spec it to your power level.
