The Whipple Gen 6 3.0L Supercharger for the 2024-2026 Mustang GT and Dark Horse

The 2024-2026 Mustang GT comes with 486 hp from the factory and the Dark Horse with 500. Fun, until you drive one with 300 more. Whipple's Gen 6 3.0L supercharger kit is how the S650 gets there: 810 hp at Stage 1, 875 at Stage 2, and 900 at Stage 3, all on a stock engine, all with a calibration in the box, and all fitting under the factory hood without cutting anything.

This is the kit we've put on our own 2024 GT, our Blue Ember Dark Horse, and a long list of customer cars since the S650 landed. What follows is what the kit is, what it actually makes on a dyno, and the engineering decisions behind it, including the one everyone asks about.

Have a 2027? The 2027 kits are the same supercharger with a revised head unit and manifold for the new fuel rail, and they are not interchangeable with these. Read the 2027 guide instead.

What Makes the Gen 6 Different

The Gen 5 3.0L was already a record-setting supercharger. Whipple rebuilt it anyway. The Gen 6 rotor pack has a new rotor design and profile, an updated bearing plate, and a reshaped inlet port for better rotor filling. The result is more airflow and lower discharge temperatures across the whole RPM range, and the gap widens as the revs climb. In Whipple's own testing, same pulley and same conditions, the Gen 6 made roughly 30 to 35 hp more than the Gen 5 on 91 octane.

We talked to Dustin Whipple about the kit when it launched. The whole conversation is worth the time:

The other half of the temperature story is the intercooler. Under the lid there is not one intercooler but two, each a dual-pass core with dual 3/4 inch inlets and outlets. Air passes through each core twice before it reaches the engine, which gives the system roughly double the capacity of a single core and nearly twice the water flow. Lower charge temps mean more boost and more timing on pump gas, which is the whole reason a twin-screw beats a roots blower on a street car.

Whipple also moved from the Roval throttle body to a round design on the Gen 6. The Roval made great power and sat lower for hood clearance, but some cars ran into idle control issues with it. The round blade seals better and flows more; the round 112mm flows what the 132mm Roval did, with none of the idle complaints.

Horsepower Numbers, Rated and Real

Whipple rates the kits at the flywheel, on 93 octane, using the Dark Horse as the reference car. A GT typically lands 8 to 12 hp lower on the same kit.

  • Stage 1: 810 hp / 640 lb-ft. 820 hp with the Open Air Kit.
  • Stage 2: 875 hp / 660 lb-ft. 885 hp with the Open Air Kit.
  • Stage 3: 900 hp with the 120mm throttle body and Open Air Kit. [VERIFY: torque]

Flywheel numbers are a brochure. Here is what the kit makes at the tires.

Our 2024 Mustang GT, Stage 2: 807 rwhp

Our own 2024 GT runs the full exhaust: Kooks long-tube headers, a Corsa double H-pipe, and a cat-back, plus a McLeod RXT clutch and an MGW shifter. On the 3.75 inch pulley it made 807 rwhp. We were blown away. Heh.

A stock Dark Horse, Stage 2: 755 rwhp

What about a stock car? Our friend Igor brought his 2024 Dark Horse down from North Carolina and put it on the rollers at Palm Beach Dyno. Stock 10R80, stock exhaust down to the tips, Stage 2 complete kit, Whipple's calibration. 755 rwhp.

Our Blue Ember Dark Horse, Lethal Edition Stage 2: 795 rwhp

Our own Dark Horse got the Lethal Edition Stage 2 kit and an AWE SwitchPath cat-back, nothing else, stock manifolds and cats. First pull on 93 octane: 729 rwhp and 583 lb-ft. Second pull with octane booster: 795 rwhp and 619 lb-ft. Same 3.75 inch pulley. The full install and dyno session is its own article.

How It's Fueled

The 2024-2026 kits use the factory fuel pump. Injectors are Bosch 55 lb/hr units, the same injector Whipple uses in the 2018-2023 Mustang kits, mounted in a set of billet fuel rails with 6AN inlets and outlets. A Stage 3 kit adds Whipple's boost-a-pump on top of that. For anyone planning a serious fuel system later, the billet rails are already the right starting point.

What Happened to the Dual Throttle Bodies

The S650 arrived with dual air intakes and dual throttle bodies, and the internet immediately decided this was sacred. The Gen 6 kit keeps Ford's dual intake tracts, merges them, and feeds a single throttle body at the supercharger inlet. People asked why. Here is why.

Whipple Gen 6 single throttle body inlet on the 2024-2026 Mustang GT supercharger kit

Dustin Whipple designed a dual throttle body inlet first. He nicknamed it the hammerhead, because that is what it looked like. It had two problems. The inlet was so large it sat over the supercharger pulley, and while nothing touched, any pulley change meant pulling the entire inlet off first. That kills the three-minute pulley swap at the track. Second, the hood line forced the inlet to neck downward hard, which cost airflow and created turbulence right where you least want it.

Whipple tested dual 80mm and dual 102mm throttle bodies before landing on the single inlet, which flowed better than any of them. A single 120mm throttle body flows more than these kits will ever ask of it, so there was no power left on the table. The kit ships with an injection-molded rubber inlet tube that is 120mm at every end, so you never change the tube no matter which throttle body you run, and the MAF housings carry Whipple's own carbon traps, which flow far better than Ford's coiled-up originals.

Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 3

The supercharger, intercooler, injectors, rails, and pulley are the same across all three stages. Every kit ships with the 3.75 inch pulley, which puts the Gen 6 at roughly 12 psi. [VERIFY: pulley and boost figures still current.] What changes is the throttle body, the intake, and how hard the calibration pushes.

  • Stage 1: single 92mm round throttle body using GT500 electronics, and the street-friendly calibration. Available with a 3/36k powertrain warranty, and in a Lethal Edition finish.
  • Stage 2: billet 112mm round throttle body, and a more aggressive calibration: higher rev limiter, higher shift points, more spark. The kit most of our customers buy.
  • Stage 3: billet 120mm throttle body, the Open Air Kit, and the boost-a-pump. Built for the car that is going past 900.
  • Open Air Kit versions of Stage 1 and 2 swap the enclosed filters for Whipple's open intake, worth about 10 hp.

The Stage 1 powertrain warranty covers up to $7,500 in engine damage and $2,000 in transmission damage, for cars under 36,000 miles and three years old. [VERIFY: current warranty terms.] If that is the reason you would buy Stage 1 over Stage 2, it is a good reason.

How It's Tuned

The S650 PCM is locked tighter than its S550 predecessor's, and Ford did not leave a back door. Whipple's relationship with Ford is what makes the kit work: every complete kit ships with the Tomahawk V2 flash tool and a Whipple calibration, and you flash it yourself. No tuner required to get the car running on the kit.

Whipple's calibration survives Ford's over-the-air updates. It lets you change gear ratio and tire size, run a crank relearn, and it uses the adaptive throttle body, which adjusts to the climate the car lives in rather than fighting it. The Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits carry CARB EO D-231-129, which covers the 2024 and 2025 model years installed as supplied with Whipple's calibration. The 2026 model year is not covered by the Executive Order, and Stage 3 does not carry one.

If you would rather have your own tuner write the file, every stage is available as a no-flash-tool kit. Lund Racing, Palm Beach Dyno, and Shoemaker Performance all tune Gen 6 cars. We do not write tunes; we sell the kits and build the cars.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much horsepower does a Whipple supercharger add to a 2024-2026 Mustang GT?

Whipple rates the Stage 1 kit at 810 hp, Stage 2 at 875, and Stage 3 at 900, at the flywheel on 93 octane. At the tires we have seen 755 rwhp on a stock Dark Horse with Stage 2 and 807 rwhp on our own GT with full exhaust.

Does the Whipple kit fit a 2024-2026 Mustang Dark Horse?

Yes. The same kit fits the GT and the Dark Horse. Whipple's ratings use the Dark Horse as the reference car; a GT lands 8 to 12 hp lower on the same kit.

Do I need a tune for a Whipple supercharger on a 2024-2026 Mustang?

Every complete kit ships with Whipple's Tomahawk V2 flash tool and calibration. You flash it yourself. The no-flash-tool kits are for owners who want their own tuner to write the file.

Why does the Whipple kit use a single throttle body instead of the factory dual setup?

Whipple built and tested a dual throttle body inlet first. It blocked the pulley for maintenance and had to neck down so far under the hood that it cost airflow. The single inlet flowed better than dual 80mm or dual 102mm throttle bodies in testing.

Does the 2024-2026 Whipple kit fit a 2027 Mustang?

No. Ford changed the fuel rail and injector packaging on the 2027 5.0L, and Whipple revised the head unit and manifold to clear it. The 2027 kit is its own part number and the two are not interchangeable.

Is the Whipple 2024-2026 Mustang kit CARB legal?

The Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits, with or without the Open Air Kit, carry CARB EO D-231-129 for the 2024 and 2025 model years. The 2026 model year is not covered, and Stage 3 has no EO. If you are in a CARB state, check the product page for your stage and model year before ordering.

Can I finance a Whipple supercharger kit?

Yes. Installments and 0% APR options are available at checkout on qualifying orders.
